About ShindigZ
January 22, 2007 — Wendy MoyleSince 1926, ShindigZ has been America’s favorite for Prom and party supplies. From coast to coast, we’ve played a pivotal role in transforming millions of special events from ordinary to extraordinary. When we introduced the first “Memorie” book and the first decorations for Prom, who would have imagined what ShindigZ would ultimately become!
History of ShindigZ
Hubert Stump founded Stumps (the original name of the company) in 1926 in South Whitley, Indiana, a small town located just outside Fort Wayne, Indiana. The original Stumps Printing Company was started primarily as a commercial printer and local newspaper publisher. As local legend has it, in the depths of the Depression, Hubert Stump was left with one nickel that he could either use to buy a loaf of bread or put in the church collection plate. Hubert, as the story goes, put the nickel in the collection plate. The next day, Hubert came up with the concept of the “Memorie” booklet, a printed favor for Proms and Junior-Senior receptions. The “Memorie” booklet was a great success.
Over the next decade, Stumps continued to expand and began to print products for schools like lunch tickets, menus, athletic schedules, and award certificates. In the 1940s, Stumps introduced crepe streamers, balloons, and even the first large-area decorating theme kit (Evening in Paris) to its offerings. In the 1960s, it introduced the first full-color catalog featuring numerous theme kits. Stumps also moved to a new manufacturing and distribution facility in 1962.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Stumps grew rapidly, and the company changed dramatically. Stumps began offering the first personalized favors for high-school students and party concepts were added to the company with a new special occasion catalog.
In 1990, Shep and Wendy Moyle purchased Stumps Printing (named changed to ShindigZ in 2006), a school prom and party supply company, located in South Whitley, Indiana. Since that time the company has moved aggressively to focus on 100% customer satisfaction, exceptional quality, and solid product values. Stumps also introduced a new Homecoming Spirit Catalog in 1991, a new elementary school catalog called Everything Elementary in 1994, and a birthday supply catalog called BirthdayZ by ShindigZ in 2003. Stumps has featured as many as fifteen different catalogs a year.
Since 1990, Stumps has acquired three companies to complement their party business. In 1998, they acquired the assets of Glass Branders, a glass decorating company based in Toledo, Ohio. In 2000, Stumps acquired SpiritLine, Inc., of Dallas, Texas, a fundraising and spirit catalog company.
In 1996, Stumps pioneered a new concept for the Prom and party industry by developing the first website devoted entirely to facilitating the party and Prom market. At StumpsProm.com, you can get Prom planning advice from experts on everything from fundraising ideas, to great decorating themes, Prom Surveys, and tips on how to get ready for the big date.
Stumps has been active in establishing its on-line presence and in January 1999 unveiled the world’s first on-line party superstore - www.ShindigZ.com. This complete on-line catalog with the latest in web shopping technology allows customers all over the world access to thousands of party supply items at 40% below retail cost. ShindigZ.com features expanded categories for the company including wedding products, holiday items, kid’s birthday products, and supplies for Bar Mitzvahs.
ShindigZ was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst and Young in 1999 and one of “Indiana’s 100 Fastest Growing Companies” by the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. In 2000, Forbes Magazine named ShindigZ.com one of the “Top 400 Websites in America.” In the July 2002 issue, Catalog Success magazine named five catalog industry professionals as winners of the first-annual Catalogers of the Year awards. Winners demonstrated innovation in cataloging, measurable company growth, and advancement to the catalog industry as a whole. According to Donna Loyle, editor of Catalog Success, the Business-to-Business Catalogers of the Year award was given to the Moyles because of their impressive business acumen. Since their purchase of Stumps in 1990, the Moyles have taken the company from a one-catalog company with 40 employees to a 14-title firm with seven websites and 425 employees.
In the second quarter of 2002, Stumps acquired Celebration Fantastic, a gift catalog and Internet retailer that features premium quality gifts, collectibles, apparel and décor for holidays and celebrations. Celebration Fantastic features more than 2,300 items, including Michael Simon apparel, Limoges boxes, and unusual and whimsical items.
Because of great demand for more birthday-related items, Stumps introduced BirthdayZbyShindigZ.com in Spring 2003, a site dedicated to making birthdays fun for everyone! By offering exclusive items, personalized products, party planning tips, and more, BirthdayZbyShindigZ.com has emerged as a unique alternative to the basic birthday party store. Online party stores BannerZ by ShindigZ and Costumes by ShindigZ were added in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
Stumps continues to be on the cutting edge of innovation in the Prom & Party industry by focusing on a simple formula of fun, unique products with good value, backed by extraordinary customer satisfaction.

Do you wholesale in bulk quantities? I’m starting a party store in my local town. I have done a lot of research and your wide range of selection of party merchandise is far superior to any other party store or wholesaler I have found. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
Geoff Corleone

I’ve used products from Shindigz from time to time and found them to be of good value. However, I recently purchased one that was a pathetic sight. It was a 10 foot felt palm tree. We couldn’t get it to stand up, it took hours to assemble and it was of poor quality. It was over $100 totally wasted. We trashed it! The other palm trees (5 foot) were great and the other supplies ordered were of expected quality. If I were ShinDigz, I wouldn’t sell the 10 foot palm trees (item TRJPT) any longer.

Ann, Thanks so much for your post. It is great to see us getting feedback from customers through this new tool. It is always great to receive positive comments and feedback–it makes our team members feel great that we are helping the world celebrate–but I also thank you for your comments on our palm tree.
Jodie from our customer service team will be contacting you today about your situation and handling your personal situation. I apologize for your frustration with this product and we will make sure you are delighted with your experience. Let me know how this goes.
On the palm tree, we will immediately put this tree into our SWAT team–the Shindigz Wild Action Team–which is tasked to take our products and build them from the customers perspective and make continuous suggestions for improvements to make our products easier to use and a great value.
This process normally takes about 3 weeks to complete and we will post our findings and actions for you to see.
Thanks again for taking the time. We appreciate your loyalty and willingness to help us get better. Hope it’s not too hot where you are. 93 degrees here today!
All the best, Shep Moyle, President and Owner

Hi: My husband is having his 50th. I need to come up with ideas for a party at the Lake (he loves to fish).
All ideas are welcomed.
Thanks a bunch
FYI - I love Shindigz - the only source I use for Party stuff.

could you send me a catalouge on your quincenera thanks
March 7, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Debbie,
Thanks so much for your post and your interest in ShindigZ. For a fisherman there are a couple of ways to go; Nautical or Pirate, for fun! If you are actually planning the party by the lake I would start decorating around the dock and yard with Tiki Torches, Lanterns or Spheres found at the links below. Even if your event begins in the afternoon you want to be prepared to illuminate the area to keep the festivities alive.
Tiki Torches - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=680197
Lanterns - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=677950 or http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=677952 or http://www.shindigz.com/catalog2.cfm?caid=692337 or http://www.shindigz.com/catalog2.cfm?pgp=3P484B
Decorate the food area/table with a nautical lantern http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=964532
Personalized napkins - nautical style - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?pgp=2V052A . We also have a couple of fish designs if you would rather use that instead of the anchor.
Netting is a great decorating tool to set the nautical mood -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=872411 . Add an anchor, dockside pilings and voila -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=887690 .
If you think a pirate theme would be a great spin then keep the Tiki torches and lanterns and add a treasure chest to the table - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=891526 . Add a phony treasure map to keep the other pirates guessing where the bounty is -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=891498 . This would also be a great activity for everyone. Treasure hunts were the rage for awhile, a game everyone can enjoy!
Add a pirate flag to the area to warn off any party crashers - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=891954 . And what would a pirate be without his parrot- http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=891792 . You can view all of our nautical decorations here -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?cat=16678 . You can view all of our pirate decorations here - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?cat=25404 .
Happy 50th birthday to your husband! I’m sure you will have a great event! Please contact us with any questions at 1-260-723-5171 or csr@shindigz.com.

April 3, 2008 at 2:31 pm
My daughter is having an Olympic themed Bat Mitzvah in May. Can you give me some suggestions regarding party favors that you have?
Thanks,
Shelly
April 10, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Shelly,
Thanks so much for your post and your interest in ShindigZ. With this being an Olympic Summer I would suggest a patriotic theme. With a few items to indicate the orient location of the games this year. Here are a few options you may like as favors. Remember our personalized favors can be imprinted with the wording and design of your choosing.
CD Album -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=671708
Mint Card -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=945734
ID Lanyard- All the Olympic Athletes need these to enter their event venues -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=816792
Here are a few additional decorating ideas. I’m sure you plan to have the Olympic rings displayed. I would suggest 2 options for creating this display. Take either hula hoops or Styrofoam wreaths and cover them in metallic streamers in the Olympic colors -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=669830 . Light the flame to begin the ceremony/party - http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=679918 . A personalized banner to announce your daughter’s special day, available with or without a photograph -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=923091 or http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=716079 . Balloons are a great addition to any festivity -
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?caid=673900 or http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?pgp=P0390E or
http://www.shindigz.com/catalog.cfm?pgp=5S002E . Best wishes on a great Bat Mitzvah! Please contact us with any questions at 1-800-314-8736 or csr@shindigz.com.
