Trek to the Stars for Graduation

The beauty of a stars theme for a graduation party is that there are so many directions you can take it. Trekkers, divas, science majors, and recruits headed for basic training are just a few of the young people’s current or upcoming roles for which a stars party might very well constitute a cosmic fit.

Set a slogan based on aiming high, reaching for the stars, or getting ready to explore new worlds. Then, go shopping for decorations and personalized products for a star bash to remember.

The Stars Store and Graduation Store make the best start, but you may also want to visit Hollywood, Patriotic or City categories, too, depending on the specific theme and slogan.

Backgrounds for star parties are generally blue, black or purple with star designs in white, gold or silver. Poly vinyl rolls, flat paper, corrugated paper, backdrop illustrations and gossamer all include star patterns so you’ve no shortage of materials in setting the stage.

Cover large areas with background materials but keep them in mind for coordinated “accessory” decorations, too. For example, you can cover a plain cardboard box in flat paper to create a greeting card box (and check out these DIY ideas for lollipop displays).

Perhaps you have caught on from previous posts that we are fans of gossamer decorating fabric. :0) We feel the bias is well placed as it is ideal for so many applications. In this case, we particularly like gossamer for outdoor venues. Choose gossamer for draping the underside of a gazebo, wrapping around picnic shelter columns or tent legs, or otherwise classing up a canopy, deck or garage.

Emphasize ceilings to encourage attendees to look up – perfect for this party theme, right? There will never be a better time for covering ceilings and/or dangling lots of hanging decorations.

For an evening party or open house, pair Glow Star gossamer with a galaxy of clear Stars Around balloons and add a black light or two for best effect.

Next, it’s time to start personalizing! Plant a likeness of the grad among the stars backdrop and effects as a surprise conversation piece. You have plenty of options in this area, too: Life Size grad standees, photo canvases and giant greeting cards are just a few ways to spotlight the guest of honor.

Do you have a telescope? Use it as a prop. Situate a Big Head standee with the telescope in front of your stars backdrop for a display that will have everyone in stitches.

With colors, slogan and major props settled, you can continue selecting supplies that will coordinate with the overall look and coordinate or match each other. Our “Twinkle Stars,” “Glitter Stars,” and “Under the Stars,” among others, are recurring throughout our product line so you can find invitations, banners and favors – even bottle labels! – in an identical design. Everyone will appreciate your attention to detail.

Trendy for 2013 Graduations – Giant Greeting Cards

Here are graduation greeting cards that recipients are sure to show off: giant cards you can customize, personalize, and use to surprise!

Giant greeting cards come in 18”, 24” and 36” and envelopes are available, too. Select from 15 designs — but that’s just where customization begins. You will also be choosing colors, uploading one or more photos (depending on design) and composing text for the front as well as the content of the message inside.

One way or another, 2013 giant grad cards are sure to become keepsakes and there are several ways to use them.

Note of congratulations. Pass around a card with a “You did it” or “Congrats” type message to as many of the extended family to sign as possible before you give it to the grad.

Graduation announcements. Imagine delivering glad grad tidings to grandparents and other individuals who’ve played formative roles in the life of your new graduate.

Part of the party. Place a giant card on an entrance or gift table at a graduation party as an informal guest book for grad party-goers to sign.

For any of the above ideas, you also could attach additional photos and captions scrapbook-style to the inside pages of the card to further personalize it.

Now, let’s say that you have an interest in coordinating one or more giant grad greeting cards with your graduation party décor. In that case, start by selecting your party colors first. If the scheme will be the graduate’s school colors or favorite colors, shopping for party supplies by color is a good strategy.

If you’re looking to put on a theme party, shop by theme to check out the colors used in the props and decorations you like.

Luau is one of the most popular grad party themes, so we’ll use it as an example. You’ll notice that luau decorations tend to be pink, red, yellow, green and blue in some combination of two or more of these colors. Once you’ve decided upon the one or two dominant colors for your luau, you can use them in the background and text of your card decoration.

Place your luau grad card on an easel at the entrance of the party, or use it as a centerpiece. Drape a coordinating silk lei jauntily over the front corner to finish.

In addition to graduations, we make giant greeting cards for birthdays and holidays, too. Customize a giant card as a surprise element for your next event.

Live Up a New York Theme Party in Your Own Big Apple

Take a hearty bite out of the Big Apple by making your next bash a New York City theme party.

NYC Themes Just Right
There are nearly as many city theme party ideas for the Big Apple as there are occasions. Pear Pair up a corporate mixer with a sophisticated Madison Avenue theme, a winter formal with romantic Central Park, or a New Year’s Eve with a Times Square experience. A graduation might recall fond remembrances of a visit to the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty, while a fundraiser event might provide a 1920s-style NYC jazz club scene.

Once you’ve decided – or to help you decide! – take a preliminary trip to City Theme Party Props to take a peek at our inventory.

Did You Peek at the Props?
That’s fine! City theme props, kits and decorations are gorgeous, and there’s such a collection you’ll need to consider the party space and how many skyscrapers it can hold. Once you’ve determined your space needs and accommodations, select your buildings and monuments, newsstands and taxis.

Note that choice of props will also help you dress the party up or down.

Watch for the new props that come with activated sound chips that provide bites of traffic noise or saxophone jazz.

Making More Beautiful Decorating Music
Whether photorealistic or stylized, simple or busy, the backdrop must harmonize with the props. Recently introduced city party backgrounds, such as City Limits patterned flat paper rolls, can help you get the job done with a minimum of time and expense.

To re-create NYC’s nightly glow, backlight your props with red spotlighting and a plain background. Shindigz tends to favor a flat paper in Thunder Gray for this type of lighting effect, which you can see in catalog photos of some of the city prop kits such as Twilight in Central Park, shown above right.

Supply an abundance of twinkling city lights with street lamps, lots of string lights and lit centerpieces from city party tableware.

End on a High Note
An apple martini cocktail, AKA appletini, seems just right for some adult Big Apple themes. Here’s a recipe from The One Minute Bartender:

p.s. Personalized martini glasses make terrific city theme party favors!
