Since the early days of television, with shows like The Original Amateur Hour which migrated from radio to TV in 1948, Americans have loved watching amateur musical talent from the comfort of home. But it was over fifty years later before the genera became a hit.   American Idol debuted during the summer of 2002 and gave television audiences the first opportunity to vote for their favorite artists each week.

American Idol kicked off a national craze that inspired many local communities to host their own vocal competition parties. There has been a growth in populaity of music themed decorations each year since Idol debuted.

Over the past decade, several shows have challenged American Idol’s dominance, including America’s Got Talent, X Factor, and now The Voice.  Television producers never disclose exactly how many total votes their shows receive, but millions of viewers are believed to participate each week.  Recently, TV ratings have given The Voice a slight edge in total viewership to take the show to the top.

Shindigz, a leading seller of party supplies, conducted a nationwide online poll to see if American Idol has lost its luster and the results were conclusive.  The Voice captured 62.5 % of the votes, compared to 17.5% for American Idol when voters were asked, “What’s your favorite music reality show?”  The remaining votes were divided between America’s Got Talent and X-Factor, which are both on hiatus this season.

Spring Break Party Ideas

Get ready to PARTY!!! Spring break is here already and here are some fun party ideas no matter where you spend Spring Break.

Glow Party
Text, video chat, instant message, or use your favorite social media to get your friends together for a glow party.

Be sure to have your guests wear a white t-shirt to the party so that other guests can write on their t-shirt with different colored highlighters. Then have a blacklight that you turn on after everyone has arrived. Now you will be able to see the secret messages and designs on everyone’s shirts.

When the guests arrive, make sure they have glow in the dark bracelets, multicolor necklaces, and glow sticks. The light up porcupine rings are so funky!

Decorate the party space with glow star gossamer decorating material. Turn out the lights and the gossamer glows! Hang white sparkle spray glow balloon accents from the ceiling and they are not just for balloons anymore! You can also deck out the ceiling with a package of glow stars, comets, and moons.

Guests can drink from glow in the dark stadium cups with glow straws. If you need coasters, the toxic spill coasters could not be any cooler! Even these coasters glow in the dark.

Give the guests glow in the dark paint, some paint brushes, and poster board. Let them have fun creating a sign or painting to hang in the space for the night. Have a light up jellyfish yo-yo contest and the winners get to take home the yo-yo’s.

Hip Hop Party
Get your hat turned sideways and let your pants hang on the ground, it’s a hip hop party! Have guests enter through the hip hop arch and have the DJ turn the music up! There are several cool hip hop standees too, including a low rider car. Have guests wear plenty of bling. A set of grillz gangsta teeth will be notorious at this party!
